Using the freehand style splashed ink technique and combining with the Shanghai School brushwork which always stresses on the basics of applying brush in presenting the strokes of ‘pause’, ‘turn’, ‘stay’, go’, ‘straight’, ‘odd lean’, ‘slant’, ‘push’, ‘pull’ and etc. With no intention to deliberately painted out the resemblance of the subject but still not working beyond its shapes and forms, Shen Ying painted the blooming lotus blossoms amongst the pond during summer time on the rice paper. Added in the light and graceful dragonflies, she completed an impressively stunning and vivid piece of art. The painted scene could well-engaged viewers to resonate with the artist’s feeling about the joyous moment of appreciating the summertime vista at the lotus pond.
沈颖写意地以精简的笔触，赋以亮眼的色彩绘出鸡群一家子在盛开的紫藤花架下，无忧无虑地聚集在一起分享粮食的情景，寓示着一个生活幸福美满的家庭，既合家欢乐，也吉祥富贵。同时它也呈现出海派画风及笔法的磅礴气势和丰富内蕴。笔触虽简练却具备了神、形、情、境与气韵等内涵，生动有力、引人绮思。
Shen Ying, with her freehand style in applying the streamlined brush stroke, painted a family of chickens enjoy sharing their meals under the blooming Wisteria flower stand with no worries or concerns. This indicates a happy family with a happy and blessed life, portraying both family harmony and auspicious living. At the same time, it also showcases the style of Shanghai School (海派）art including its imposing manner of brush strokes and the richness in contents of art. Although the brush strokes are simply concise, each stroke carries inputs of the elements of expression, shape/form, emotion, situation and conception in art that ended up completing a vivid and compelling artwork. It engaged viewers to ponder.
沈颖写意地以精简的笔触，赋以亮眼的色彩绘出鸡群一家子在盛开的紫藤花架下，无忧无虑地聚集在一起分享粮食的情景，寓示着一个生活幸福美满的家庭，既合家欢乐，也吉祥富贵。同时它也呈现出海派画风及笔法的磅礴气势和丰富内蕴。笔触虽简练却具备了神、形、情、境与气韵等内涵，生动有力、引人绮思。
Taking Mynah birds that inhabited under Penang Hill as the subject of art, Shen Ying technically applied Shanghai School freehand brushwork and ink in this painting. By integrating the distinctive characteristic of Modern Art, which tends to be boldly innovative and always breaking through the traditional way of thinking as well as the visual effects, she painted the beautiful scenery outside the window and depicted how the Mynah birds living in groups happily and freely. After viewing this piece of work, one could easily perceive that Shen Ying never forgets about innovation and creativity while inheriting the essence of the fine tradition of the Shanghai School art. She strives to modernise and popularises the traditional Chinese brush painting art towards leading it to another height and breadth.
沈颖以槟城升旗山下生息的八哥鸟为主题，融合了海派大写意开阔跌宕的笔墨特点，结合了现代美术的时代特征，大胆创新，突破传统的思维方式与视觉效果，描绘了窗外风光明媚中，八哥鸟群体自由自在的美好生活动态。看了这幅作品，不难领略出沈颖在传承海派的优良笔墨传统精髓的同时，不忘创新求变，把传统水墨艺术时代化，普及化，臻致另一个高度、阔度。
This painting titled “The Haven”, which symbolizes the warm, comfortable, harmonic and safe feelings offered to the family members by a warm and blessed “home”. The bright coloured blooms of the reeds amongst the darker coloured background representing the family members or the love of family always being the light that enlightened us in the darkness or during the undesirable moments in our lives. That often giving us care, expectation, comfort and encouragement while we are striving to live for life.
这幅画的题名标为“避风港”，它象征一个温馨的“家”给予家人的宁静、舒适、和谐及安全的感觉。在深邃的背景中点缀着亮眼的芦花儿，意味着家人或亲情乃是我们生活处于黑暗中的明灯，常带给为生活打拼的我们关怀与期盼，安慰与鼓励。

Shen Ying and the Generational Discipleship of “Shanghai School” Art 沈颖与海上画派的世代门徒传承
Based on her art tutelage and training under her master, Lim Kay Hiong and relating Shen Ying’s art creations and the style of her art practice to the influence and discipleship of Shanghai School art (海上画派 – 海派), a family tree of the direct linking generational discipleship is presented below for reference.
